The Leaves 1.28.13

This Friday February 1st is a staff development day. There will be no school Friday.

Blue Oak is pleased to announce that the Chico Unified School Board has renewed our Charter for the next 5 years, July 2013-June 2018. The vote was unanimous and board member Dr. Kathleen Kaiser praised the efforts of students, parents and staff in the improvements so far and encouraged the community to keep moving forward. Thank you for your support in being present at the meeting and all your positive thoughts. We look forward to serving your students in the years to come.

Tuesday February 12th is a big night for us at Blue Oak. Liz Beaven is scheduled to provide a talk on Waldorf education from 6-8pm. Liz is an experienced, accessible and knowledgeable Waldorf educator from Sacramento and we are delighted that she was willing to make a trip up our way. She will address such questions as, “What is a main lesson? What about reading? Why does my child hear so many stories? What is form drawing? What is expected of me as a parent?”

Our goal is to have at least half our families in attendance at this evening. This is a fantastic way to complete your parent volunteer hours and support your child’s education. Please sign up on the sheet outside your child’s classroom, or with Beth at the front desk.

It is DEFINITELY cold and flu season. Our school-wide attendance has been dramatically lower than usual. Now is the time to take especially good care of yourselves and your children; lots of rest, water, good nutrition, and hand washing. And please do not send your child to school with a fever so that we can all move toward wellness.

Save the date: March 22 is the Blue Oak Ball, a dinner and dance fundraiser to support the eighth grade class trip. Tickets are $40 in advance and available at the coffee kiosk before school. Ma Muse and Wolf Thump are scheduled to perform and it should be a wonderful time had by all!

Since the winter break we have noticed an increase in students arriving on campus before 7:50 when we have supervision available. Please do not bring your child to campus before this time as this puts both your child and the school at risk.

We are currently seeking a new Secretary for the Parent Council. If you have any interest or questions about this role, please contact Summer@blueoakcharterschool.org. Our next meeting is February 26th at 6 pm.

Parent Council Notes

We had a wonderful Parent Council meeting last week.  With our new discussion format we had time to connect and discuss many important issues that affect our community. We even began discussing what we would like for this year's May Faire!   A May Faire Committee was formed and we will be holding our first committee meeting very soon.  If you would like to be involved in the planning of this festival please contact Summer@blueoakcharterschool.

As always you are encouraged to come and join the conversation.  It is a nice opportunity to connect.  For a full summary of our P.C. discussion points see  http://www.blueoakcharterschool.org/storage/PC%20Mtg.%20January%20Discussion%20points%201.22.13..pdf
