The Leaves 1.15.13

We are so very fortunate to have a Waldorf-inspired school available to our children in Chico. One of the great tasks for families participating in this form of education is to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of Waldorf philosophy and practice.

To this end we have a wonderful guest speaker coming to Blue Oak on Tuesday February 12 at 6pm. Her name is Liz Beaven, Ed.D., and she has previously worked as a teacher and administrator at the Sacramento Waldorf School. She is also one of the keynote speakers at the annual Alliance for Public Waldorf Education conference happening in Sacramento this weekend. She will be presenting “Waldorf 101”, but even those who are very familiar with Waldorf Education will walk away with new understanding and renewal.

Our goal is to have at least half our families in attendance at this parent education evening. Childcare will be available as part of our Tuesday rhythm. Also, for this large event we are asking you to sign up at your child’s classroom.

The Chico Unified School Board vote to approve our charter petition will occur next Wednesday, January 23 at 6pm in the City Council Chambers at 4th and Main Street. Please plan to attend and support Blue Oak in this important process.

Please complete the parent survey on the Winter Concert. The Survey Monkey link is available on our website or you can go directly to https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/WinterConcert2012.

The Volunteer Board is full of a variety of tasks requiring help. The board is located in the parent center just to the right of the front lobby. Please take a minute to check it out and contact our Community Coordinator Summer O'Neill atSummer@blueoakcharterschool.org, or 879-7483 ext. 2037, with any questions.

Our next Parent Council Meeting happens Tuesday January 22, at 6 pm. We will be discussing the parent roles in the classroom, school safety, and this year's May Fair. Please come join in our conversation.

As a measure to support student safety, close and secure all doors as you enter and exit the building.

Substitute Staff Needed

If you are interested in working as a substitute classified aide or certificated teacher at Blue Oak, please come to an informational meeting on Thursday January 24tha at 4:30pm. You may contact Nathan Rose atNathan@blueoakcharterschool.org for more information.

Notes from Charter Council

The Blue Oak Charter Council met on January 8th. There was discussion about the minor accidental fire that broke out on Monday January 7th and a discussion of safety plans and drills, the fact that we are up to code passing the Fire Inspection last month, and the feasibility of having a safety refresher course for the staff.

There was discussion regarding teacher training and professional development, a topic to be continued at our next meeting. We also reviewed the Administrative evaluation process, forms and time line. Parent, staff and faculty questionnaires will be part of this process.

The Title I Site Council is being formed for an annual meeting to review our methods to support learning for low income students. We also talked about the fact that 1 in 3 children in Butte County experience food insecurity (hunger) and we discussed a few ideas on how we could help in that regard during vacations and summer break.

The next meeting of the Blue Oak Council will be February 5th at 6PM.

We wish you all a very Happy New Year!
