Charter Renewal Update
Tighe O'Neill, chair of the Blue Oak Charter Council, and Nathan Rose, executive director, presented the Blue Oak School petition for charter renewal to the CUSD School Board last Wednesday, Dec. 5th. This Petition is for a 5-year renewal. Eighth grader Rosendo Anguiano-Sainz told the CUSD board that the teachers at Blue Oak are dedicated to long-term academic goals, but that they also bring laughter, games, fiber arts, gardening and so much more to the students.
The next step in charter renewal will be for the CUSD School Board to give their official vote at a meeting in January, at a date to be determined. We will let the Blue Oak community know of the event as soon as the date has been set. Thanks to all those who were able to support us at the December 5th meeting. Your respectful presence was amazing.
Work Day Thank You from Summer O’Neill
Last weekend’s workday was a great success. Not only did we accomplish what we set out to do, but perhaps on a more important note, new friendships were formed and our children saw us being of service to our community. I always enjoy the sense of accomplishment and the connection I feel to those who have shared in this achievement. Fifteen volunteers completed about 45 hours of work. In that time we were able to organize many spaces throughout the school. Thank you so much to everyone who took time out of their weekend to help make our school even better!
The second Tuesday of every month is typically set aside for parent enrichment. This month, Dec. 11th, we will be hosting aholiday crafting evening, beginning at6pm. Parents will have the opportunity to learn about the importance of handwork and make origami window stars and felted items that can be given as gifts. Light refreshments will be served. Please come enjoy a cozy time together at our school.
Holiday Craft Faire Fundraiser
Last Thursday Blue Oak hosted a lovely Craft Faire in our Great Room. This event will happen again on the next two Thursdays (12/13 and 12/20) before the break. Handmade crafts, baked goods, and local talents are for sale from 1:00pm-4:00pm (Blue Oak Parents and Children are welcome at 12:00 noon). Vendor set up begins at 11:30 and Thursday pizza is sold inside. A portion of the sales are donated to the Blue Oak Foundation and vendors have been extremely generous in giving basket donations for a raffle. Winter Music Concert
What makes a cold winter evening better? Gather your family and friends and come on down to Blue Oak to enjoy the musical talents of our 5th-8th grade ensembles, Tuesday, December 18th, from 6-7pm in the Great Room. The showcase will feature our wonderful strings ensembles, the beginning and advanced recorders and our first ever jazz band! This will be a performance not to miss. There will be a post-concert reception with refreshments immediately after in the Great Room. Childcare will be provided. Your child's teacher may have pre-concert festivities in the classroom at 5:30pm. Please look for communication from your class teacher regarding specifics. We look forward to seeing everyone there!
The Class of 2013 is on a mission! The name of that mission is Operation: Unforgettable! Collectively, the class is working to raise $1,000 for each student in the class to participate in their final class field trip next May. In service to that goal they would like you to know the following:
- First, Thank you to everyone for the outstanding support of our morning coffee kiosk! The children are having fun seeing and serving you in the morning. We plan on setting up rain or shine so if you just can't make your coffee at home in the morning, we'll have if for you! Please stop when you can. We are now selling coupon books: $10 for five cups & $20 for ten cups - buy one for yourself or a friend.
- Second, the 8th Grade will be hosting concessions at the Winter Concert! Before and after the concert we will have nachos & a potato bar for those coming directly from work. Coffee & hot cocoa will also be available
- And finally a "Save the Date" notice: The Class of 2013 is throwing the first annual Blue Oak Ball on March 22nd, 2013

Unclaimed lost and found items will be donated over the next holiday break. Please pick up any lost clothing by end of day December 21st.
Charter Council Update
The December 4th meeting of the Blue Oak Charter Council covered a number of topics, not least of which was preparation for the December 5th CUSD Charter presentation. Scott Warner of Charter Schools Management Corporation was present and we reviewed the interim report, the independent audit, and discussed a revised budget in light of the passage of Proposition 30. Our fiscal situation is very stable and we are maintaining a positive cash balance.
As a follow up to our Brown Act Training last month, we discussed some of the salient points of that training, clarified some questionable areas, and determined which committees and groups were subject to the Brown Act.
Other areas of discussion included the need to institute a Title I Site Council, proposed long term Waldorf teacher training, and our excellent student rate of attendance, which is good for students in terms of learning time and good for the school in maintaining fiscal stability. We also discussed the possibility of scheduling additional “no action” Council meetings which would be topical in nature and for the express purpose of sharing information, training, and dialogue.
Our next regular meeting will be January 8th at 6 PM. In the meantime, we wish you all a joyful holiday season.
