This Friday November 2nd is a staff development day and there is no school Friday. Please refer to our online school calendar for more information.
Wednesday the 31st we will be having a costume parade at 1:30 on the back play yard. Students will then come in to the great room to enjoy the faculty skit. Families are welcome to join us for this festivity. Please not, students will not be permitted to wear costumes with violent or frightening images, masks or weapons.
Plan to bring your student to school on Thursday November 1st. Remember that this is an official pajama day and half price pizza will be served after school. Also, our monthly class attendance award (think Jamba Juice) will be presented Thursday.
Blue Oak Charter School is renewing it's charter with the Chico Unified School District (CUSD). The process is multi-step:
i) Blue Oak writes and approves the Charter Petition
ii) Blue Oak submits to CUSD first week in November
iii) CUSD reviews our petition and holds a Board Meeting in December
iv) CUSD votes on a 5 Year Charter Petition in January.
Further Communication will follow with specific times, dates, and location for CUSD Board Meetings. Thank you for supporting Blue Oak as an important alternative model of education in the Chico community.
Did you know that the Healthy and Hunger Free Child Act has made it possible for us to serve a free supper to every child under 18? Supper is being served Monday through Friday at 3:05 in the great room and is to be eaten in the great room. Seating is available.
Town Hall Meeting
Tuesday, November 13th will be the first of two Town Hall Meetings for the 2012-2013 school year. We hope to address concerns and raise compliments to the administration and staff. This meeting will be a two part forum in which we hope to address important aspects of Blue Oak Community such as Charter Renewal and Budget, as well as provide an open forum to address issues that affect the entire school. The evening will be facilitated by Dr. Joc Clark in order to allow everyone to participate. Individual student matters should be brought to administration privately. If you have an issue that concerns the whole school, we want to hear your voice. Please join us.
The decision to hold Town Hall meetings came from our Vision and Strategy planning day. If you would like to read the planning document that was developed from that work day, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Reading Aide Position
Sarah Morgan has left her post as one of our grade 3-4 reading aides. Sarah helped develop the program last year and has provided important continuity in implementing the program with new staff this year. Thank you Sarah! This reading aide position is currently posted online at Edjoin. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 11am-12pm. It has been a difficult position to fill because of the limited hours, but could be a great opportunity for the right parent or grandparent.
Accolades for Parents
Thank you to Stacy DeLatorres and Kelly Angel for their service to our school. They have consistently held Pizza Day for years and have also coordinated our May Fair.
Thank you to Heidi Bilsborough. She holds the unbelievable record of cheerfully conducting classroom tours for 8 years solid. That's what I call a reliable volunteer!
Thank you to Melanie Ensign for taking on the responsibility of acting as the parent representative on the finance committee. The finance committee is a Charter Council committee that meets monthly to review financial decisions that affect our school.
Blue Oak is committed to the participation and collaboration of faculty, parents, board members, and administration in decision making. If you are interested in acting as a parent representative in committee work, please contact Summer at email@example.com. The current Charter Renewal process, for example, is being completed with committee work involving parent volunteers. And we often need parents for hiring committees.
Parent Council Notes
The Parent Council met last week to discuss:
- The role of Representatives in the school and how they can work best with the the parents who have taken on the parent classroom volunteer roles
- The new Blue Oak School Foundation, how it affects fundraising at our school, and how to best assess the needs of the fundraising in each classroom
- What a "Town Hall" meeting is; parents shared what they have experienced in the past and also what they would like to see addressed at the upcoming Town Hall meeting on Tuesday November 13th
If you are interested in being a part of these discussions or would like to find out more, you are welcome to attend the Parent Council Meetings which are held consistently on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 6 pm. Free Childcare is available to all those who sign up by the Monday preceding the Tuesday event.
If you have any questions or would like to request an item be placed on our Agenda, you can contact the PC chair Summer O'Neill @ firstname.lastname@example.org. The deadline for submission for the next PC agenda is 6 pm, Thursday 11/22 for the 11/27/12 PC Meeting.
